Review:
Hale Haumea Cottage is located on the sunny Puna Peninsula near all the volcanic features of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is surrounded by an organic garden and foliage on all sides, for a private retreat, with nothing but fresh air coming in through the screened-in lanai that faces the ocean. Unlike most hotels in Hawaii, Hale Haumea uses no pesticides or chemical cleaning agents or toiletries. They even provide non-chemical, fragrance-free sunscreen.

The linens, sheets and even the shower curtain are all 100% cotton and the W/D is supplied with Seventh Generation Free&Clear detergent. The rain catchment system provides all the water for the property, filtered through a UV system. The water heater is on a timer for energy saving, and the owners provide instructions on the reasons for using eco-safe products and practices. They are environmental journalists for the Big Island Weekly and strive to make their vacation rental as well as their island an example of "green living" for those that visit.

I live on the island, but have recently stayed at Hale Haumea when my neighbor was tenting their house and I needed to get away until the poisons dispersed from that neighborhood. What a welcome retreat it was.
